In stead of Vancouver being allowed to become a thriving metropolis on the Pacific Rim, the HOLD THINGS BACK mentality has been successful in having short trains, narrow roads & bridges & short buildings when compared to what most big cities allow.

As an international city, Vancouver has been continually thwarted throughout its history. Then the locals that have been conditioned to only accept a small scale city, blame those that are different than them.
When a predominantly white power structure refuses to allow Vancouver to become a proper big business city like Montreal & Toronto, Calgary & Edmonton, Seattle & SF, this is what happens.

Then it becomes easier for some BC residents to blame anyone that doesn't seem to be white. When a person is conditioned to accept short trains, narrow roads & bridges, it becomes that much easier to blame anyone that seems to be more cosmopolitan or "foreign".
While it was a wise decision to reject freeways within the city limits of Vancouver, the city has continually failed to improve or even maintain its street network.
